The Georgia Dome came down in a ball of dust — but not all of it fell. More than 300 pounds of explosives collapsed the steel in the upper ring and about 4,500 pounds of dynamite intended to crumble the concrete.

In just 12 seconds Monday morning, the Georgia Dome will be reduced to rubble, leaving behind 25 years of memories and a legacy of helping make Atlanta a renowned host of major sports events.

In a ceremony that balanced the glitz that Las Vegas embodies and the tragedy from which it is still recovering, the Oakland Raiders broke ground on a 65,000-seat domed stadium across the freeway from the city’s world-famous casinos.
